“Making Galileo part of the global multimodal transport systems (i.e. road, maritime, aviation, rail etc) and introducing its services in other application domains around the world (e.g. LBS, agriculture, personal security)”, means making international cooperation a fundamental part of the Galileo Programme.
The Galileo Programme is being built with a strong international cooperation component. Galileo offers countries across the world a number of opportunities to participate in and benefit from Europe’s development of Galileo. Regions can host Galileo ground stations, service providers can disseminate regional integrity information via Galileo satellites, while local businesses can deploy local augmentation elements for demanding professional applications or location based services.
Building on long-existing institutional and commercial relations between European countries and Latin America, the EU has established and built up links with Latin America in different domains that will be extended to EGNOS and Galileo.
International cooperation activities have been launched in different regions worldwide (e.g. China and the Mediterranean region). The cooperation with Latin America on GNSS has been initiated with the EDISA project and the organization of an EGNOS/Galileo seminar in Guatemala. The EU-Latin America summit held in Guadalajara (Mexico) on the May, 28th 2004, concluded that the possibility of extending the cooperation between Latin America and Europe to this field will be evaluated. Following the conclusions of that summit, three Galileo information days have been organized in Mexico and Brazil.
In this context, it was considered of major importance that a Galileo Information Centre was established in the region to underpin and foster the opportunities between Europe and Latin America
