If you have a great new idea for commercially using satellite navigation, it’s time to come forward. You may win funding and support to bring your idea to life, in this year’s European Satellite Navigation Competition.

Its two halves took shape in separate nations, but the first Galileo Full Operational Capability satellite has now been assembled at OHB in Bremen, Germany, to be made ready for testing.

The next Galileo navigation payload has been completed and is on its way to meet the satellite platform that will host it in orbit.

Media representatives are invited to attend an event marking the completion of the in-orbit testing of the first two Galileo satellites on 29 March at ESA’s Redu Centre in Belgium.

A worldwide chain of Galileo ground stations on some of the remotest sites on Earth is nearing completion ahead of this year’s launch of two more satellites.

The global reach of Europe’s Galileo navigation system is being harnessed to pinpoint distress calls for rapid search and rescue. A major expansion of the humanitarian system will be tested over the next two years to make it even more effective.

Next Galileo satellites to launch after the summer

Image The European Commission has announced the launch date of the next pair of ESA-procured Galileo satellites. These will be launched together on a Soyuz from French Guiana on 28 September, joining the two satellites already in orbit.

Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the European Commission, responsible for industry and entrepreneurship, announced the launch on 2 May in Brussels, together with Jean Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace, in the presence of industrial leaders involved in the programme, and in agreement with ESA’s Director of the Galileo Programme and Navigation-related Activities Didier Faivre.

The new launch will take place within a year of the first two Galileo In-Orbit Validation satellites, which reached orbit on 21 October 2011.

Four navigation satellites are the minimum needed for satellite navigation – to measure latitude, longitude and altitude while checking ranging accuracy – so these four Galileo satellites can be used to assess the performance of Galileo’s world-spanning ground system that serves to maintain the precision of the Galileo system.

In addition European industry should be able to test their own prototype Galileo-based receivers and services realistically against actual satellite signals.

The GALILEO Information Centre for Latin America is an initiative of the Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry (DG ENTR) of the European Commission, to promote and raise awareness on the Galileo project and GNSS activities in general in the Latin American (LA) region.

Started in 2005, the Centre will hold during 2012-2013 three targeted workshops in LA gathering stakeholders from industry, government and research to explore business and collaboration opportunities, to make the GNSS world available to a wider audience, to debate roadmaps, to create interest groups, etc.
